My work focuses on collaboration and coordination in face-to-face and computer-mediated contexts. I apply behavioral and social science techniques and theory to understanding people and their use of technology. I am currently studying the dynamics of large-scale collaborations across multiple people, projects, and resources. We are developing a role-playing experimental simulation of a hospital setting to observe and measure how these kinds of collaborations occur and what kinds of technologies may help reduce the coordination obstacles. I also study leadership at a distance, computer-human interaction, and virtual teams and distributed work. I examine these issues within a variety of settings, including hospitals, police departments, corporations, and classrooms, using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods.
